Mission Statement

Purebred Records is an independent record label based out of the University of New Haven. We are a devoted group of individuals full of passion and creativity. For our student-run team, we use experiential growth, applying our skills and experience in new and innovative ways, and challenging ourselves to work smarter and stronger with every new endeavor we take on. For our artists, we hope to work closely with individuals as passionate as ourselves, with the intent of providing them the support needed to achieve their artistic goals, whether this support be through recording, production, marketing, or distribution. We are dedicated to adapting to the ever-changing needs of the industry and creating an environment for ourselves, our artists, and our consumers, that exemplifies the passion and creativity that music brings forth in all of us.

Our History

The idea of establishing a student-run record label was started in 2012 by Douglas Foley, a junior from Washington, N.J., who saw it as a way to take advantage of the expertise of UNH faculty members who have extensive experience as professional musicians and music producers. Foley, who began working on this concept as a freshman, said the project began with an idea that grew into a class.

“UNH is a school with a reputable music industry program and a focus on experiential education,” said Foley. “So I thought it was a perfect match to begin a record label.”

The name of the label refers indirectly to the UNH horse mascot, Charlie the Charger.

UNH Music Industry Professor Murray Krugman, a former record producer and industry veteran with Columbia Records, is advising the students. He was responsible for producing hit records for Blue Oyster Cult and the punk rock group the Dictators, among others. He also is the owner of Silverwolf Records, which distributes 150 titles.
